George Strait Thanks Wife Norma for 53 ‘Amazing’ Years as He Accepts the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at CMAs

At the 2024 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, George Strait, known as the "King of Country," delivered an emotional acceptance speech as he received the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. The honor, introduced in 2012, celebrates artists who have achieved extraordinary influence in country music both nationally and internationally through their performances, philanthropy, and enduring legacy.

Strait, 72, took the stage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to thank those who have supported him throughout his career. His heartfelt gratitude was especially directed toward his wife, Norma Strait, as the couple celebrated 53 years of marriage. "Thank you, Norma, for standing by my side all these years. You’re my biggest inspiration and partner through it all," Strait said, reflecting on their remarkable journey together.

The award recognized Strait’s enduring impact on the genre. With a career spanning over four decades, Strait holds the record for the most No. 1 singles in country music history—60 in total—and has sold more than 100 million records globally. He also has three CMA Entertainer of the Year awards among his 17 CMA victories and 83 nominations, cementing his status as a living legend.

In her introduction, CMA CEO Sarah Trahern described Strait as “authentically country” and praised his ability to inspire generations of artists. His influence was underscored by performances from several artists who honored him on stage, reflecting the profound respect he commands within the industry.

This year, Strait also made headlines with the release of his 31st studio album, Cowboys and Dreamers, and broke records for the largest ticketed concert in U.S. history, drawing over 110,000 fans to a show in Texas.

The Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award has previously been bestowed upon iconic figures such as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and Loretta Lynn, placing Strait among an elite class of country music greats. As the CMA Awards concluded, Strait’s legacy as an artist and family man shone brightly, leaving fans and peers in awe of his enduring influence People.com Tennessean.
